This weekend, I discovered the ocarina , a tiny wind instrument (pictured above) dating back 12,000 years being very important in Chinese and Mesoamerican cultures according to Wikipedia (a completely valid source...j/k). In between conference sessions, Alan, Brent's younger brother, and I were researching Asian instruments and came across the ocarina. Not knowing what the instrument sounded like, I searched for videos of the ocarina on YouTube. Expecting a tight, pinched tone, I was surprised by a beautiful, pan-flute like sound.
The following is a video of a young man playing Brahm's Hungarian Dance on the ocarina. It is beautiful, and you are in for a treat.
As I was listening to the above video, I saw a link for this next one off to the side. I was intrigued and thought it looked humorous. I was right! This man is playing Angels We Have Heard on High with a stalk of broccoli. Yes, broccoli! Wild. It amazes me!
Known on YouTube as Heite3, this man not only plays broccoli but a myriad of different vegetables ranging from the pumpkin to cabbage. I am in complete awe. Heite3 has a slew of videos on YouTube that can be viewed at My Vegetable Musical Instruments. Again, I am in total awe! In 9th grade, I had to build a musical instrument for IPC (intro to physics and chemistry). I thought my trapezoid-shaped guitar was pretty ingenious. But now...if only I'd thought of making a flute from a turnip or acorn squash. I wonder what the market is like for vegetable instruments? Each instrument having an expiration date could cause a high turnover!
Now, if only vegetable instruments were in high demand...
Here is just one more video--a carrot trio. Bahahaha. I love it.

Was that real? Pretty cool if it was. I also did a trapeziod shaped guitar thing for IPC. There was a girl in my class who carved a flute from bamboo though.
You find the most random things. I think we should make our own veggie instruments and perform as a trio.
Let's do it!!
There are how-to videos with steps to build a flute out of a carrot on YouTube. so, that would be so fun to make a trio.
That's crazy! I'm impressed.
