February 2010 Daring Bakers' Challenge: Tiramisu

The February 2010 Daring Bakers' challenge was hosted by Aparna of My Diverse Kitchen and Deeba of Passionate about Baking. They chose Tiramisu as the challenge for the month. Their challenge recipe is based on recipes from The Washington Post, Cordon Bleu at Home, and Baking Obsession.

Tiramisu, a popular Italian dessert features ladyfinger and cream layers most often flavored with coffee and marsala wine. As a member of the LDS church, I follow the word of wisdom which prohibits the consumption of both coffee and alcohol making this month's daring challenge harder than most. To complete it, I really would have to be a little daring...so after mulling over a few different flavor ideas, I settled on chocolate (not surprising). I flavored the zagablione with hot chocolate (instead of marsala), dipped the savoiardi/lady fingers in hot chocolate (instead of espresso), and covered the top with dark-chocolate shavings.

Each of my six taste-testers said the end result was delicious, heavenly. The actual creating process was quite simple and quick, tho each successive part (mascarpone, zagablione, and pastry cream) had to chill overnight (plan on a few days when making tiramisu). The recipe can be found HERE along with other daring bakers' variations.

It was very creative of you to use hot chocolate instead of alcohol/espresso! I will have to borrow that trick next time to make it kid friendly! Well done :)

Looks delicious Lindsay! Chocolate seems like a pretty natural substitution- can't go wrong there! Great job!
