During my senior year of high school, I had the wonderful blessing and opportunity to help out in an LDS Spanish ward, playing piano for the primary (a Sunday school program for children) and Sacrament meeting. Soon I was also teaching lessons and speaking in front of the congregation during the main Sacrament meeting...in Spanish, mind you! I don't speak Spanish, so you can imagine my intimidation.
Often, I became overwhelmed with my inability to communicate as effectively as I wished. If only I could remember how to conjugate every verb. If only I could understand which song number they wanted me to play! However, as I prayed for strength, the language barrier grew less cumbersome. I was blessed with an intense love for the people I was serving. Even though my Spanish level was that of a four or five year old (if only I could speak that well again!), my love for the people communicated more than the words I spoke. Love is so BIG.
I learned a lot from the experience. For example, I learned that some primary songs are just more powerful when sung in Spanish! Okay, probably just for me because they remind me of the experience, but still I decided to share one of my favorites with you this afternoon. I hope you enjoy Mando a su Hijo (He Sent His Son).
